Abstract

Patients living with long-term health conditions frequently manage symptoms, treatment routines, lifestyle changes, uncertainty, and emotional burdens over extended periods. This paper examines how digital therapeutic support can contribute to emotional wellbeing and self-management among people living with chronic or long-term conditions. A qualitative narrative literature review was conducted using recent scholarly literature and authoritative guidance on digital therapeutics, digital health, chronic disease self-management, psychological self-help, patient education, and health equity. The analysis was organized around four dimensions: therapeutic content, self-management support, emotional wellbeing, and safe human-centered implementation. The literature indicates that digitally delivered interventions can support symptom monitoring, health education, behavioral change, medication routines, coping skills, and access to structured psychological support. However, benefits are not automatic. Engagement can decline over time, evidence quality varies across conditions, long-term outcomes remain uncertain in many settings, and digital exclusion can widen inequalities. The paper therefore argues that effective digital therapeutic support should complement—not replace—clinical care and should combine evidence-based therapeutic content, personalization, accessible design, privacy protection, appropriate clinical escalation, and continuous evaluation. A patient-centered framework is proposed to connect digital intervention features with emotional wellbeing and self-management outcomes while preserving human oversight and contextual sensitivity.
